The San de Cristos Mountains are a long mountain chain starting from Salida Colorado to Sante Fe New Mexico. As the crow flies, they are about 300 miles long. A special feature about these mountains is that they rise very steeply from the valley floor almost as they shot up from the ground jus a few years ago. Erosion has not taken its toll in that they are rough and jagged. Although there are many hiking trails and rocks, they are not as well traveled and used as some of the other
Included in the list of fourteeners is Crestone Peaks. This is a well known peak in the Sangre de Cristos Mountains. Along with this peak, there are 9 other mountains over fourteen thousand feet. There are 6 wilderness areas, 4 National parks and a host of state parks that contain parts of the Sangres. This mountain range is one of the largest of the Colorado Mountain Ranges
