Colorado has 13 mountain peaks over fourteen thousand feet. These are commonly called fourteeners in climbers’ terminology. The San Juan Mountains are host to many hundreds of summits over thirteen thousand feet. Climbing these mountains is not for the casual hiker. Many of these peaks require special hiking gear and are covered with snow and ice most of the year. Check with the local ranger stations for more information.
The San Juan mountain range also contains many wilderness areas. In fact, seven wilderness areas are part of this mountain range. These areas are ideal for campers, day hikers and just about anyone interested in outdoor activities. These wilderness areas have thousands of acres of land that has not seen a human footprint and are waiting to be explored. There are also several western heritage museums and attractions in these wilderness areas.
The San Juan Mountains are the largest
mountain range in Colorado. With over ten thousand square miles of terrain, novice to experienced climbers and hikers can discover countless trails, waterfalls, rocks and more. As with most other mountain ranges in Colorado, hikers and climbers can find areas that range from a few miles to a hundred miles or more.
